finding a solution
ok, for those of you using IE and PCs, there is now a way to select what kind of editor you want for your editing windows: WYSIWYG, HTML, or none. clearly, Manila's first implementation of this new feature was a buggy one, and there have been interesting AND productive adult discussion about it on a couple of channels. and as a result of those CIVIL discussions, the Manila programmers made sure to include a preference so you can choose which editor to have as a default. however, some of us here chose to respond (in weblogs and e-mail) with invective -- clearly (and proudly, i guess?) showing that they are youthful whippersnappers: http://www.scripting.com/images/jonBerneyBugReport.gif
the above was a link from Dave Winer's weblog, and you can find it by scrolling down to the Tuesday Oct. 3 section (linktext: "a colorful bug report"), not far above the picture of Gandhi. ::chuckle:: (oh, for those who don't know, Dave Winer is THE founder, main programmer, and head visionary of Frontier Userland and Manila.)
okay, so you ARE in fact teens (many of you)... but does knee-jerk profanity give people a good impression of you? sure, they'll still hear you -- how can they not when you're raining curses on their heads? -- but they'll also come to the conclusion that you're generically foulmouthed, have poor impulse control, and have a tendency to write the first d*$n thing that comes to mind... not a good first impression to leave people with. (you don't care? you should. you never know when people you send ad hominem attacks to will post your e-mails on the web. so sue them. lol)
so anyway, let's be clear here: it IS possible to get results without resorting to scatological prose. programmers are people too, and there's no real reason for instantly flaming them as jerks and assholes just because one is initially inconvenienced by some buggy new feature or other. in my book, civility is a virtue. of course, you're entirely welcome to not read my book...
why text rules, reason #31
Oakland (Heredia) beat the Yankees (Clemens) last night, 5-3! but that's not the reason. it's this -- here's the stuff you won't get from just watching on TV, courtesy of The NY Times' Buster Olney (article here):
Clemens pulled the bill of his cap a little lower than usual in the first innings and held his glove high, so that if you were standing at home plate with a bat in your hands, his face was almost obscured, all except for the eyes, like a burglar wearing a ski mask.
His stuff was good but not great; his four-seam fastball was 94 to 95 miles an hour, and his slider was breaking sharply. His splitter moved benignly, however, horizontally rather than vertically, and this made it harder for him to finish off left-handed hitters than he would have preferred.
for sure, this is the kind of sports writing you won't see just anywhere; only in a classy publication like the Times (makes me wish the Chron's writers were as lyrical). oh and the reason number isn't as random as it seems... it's Gil Heredia's uniform number. ;-)
yo yo yo. check out this cool picture of SF city life, that Laura drew. and this is definitely an exception that proves the rule... because, while text rules, there's that other little truism about an image and a thousand words' worth of stuff... ;-) and Laura has this remarkable gift of being able to perfectly capture a moment, or characterize someone, in a drawing. wish i had that kinda talent.
childhood memories
a while back, Abraham wondered about the oddly engaging quality of one's earliest memories. last night, in a completely random way, i found myself in a couple of IM conversations about early childhood memories -- with Giancarlo and Anna -- which happened to take place simultaneously but separately. i reprise them here:
Giancarlo hmm lil greed hasent seen a good lay day in a while...
Giancarlo play not lay !
Lloyd HAHAHA
Giancarlo lol wrong idea ! hmmm lil greed seen plenty of good lays ! but play days it been a while...
Lloyd what constitutes a play day for lil greed?
Giancarlo last time lil greed came out was when i saw spark at metreon
Giancarlo doing kids up . . . video games, monpoly, clue, other kids stuff
Lloyd Giancarlo, what was your first memory ever?
Giancarlo hmmm u really wanna know?
Lloyd Yes, i do.
Giancarlo ok
Lloyd Was it visual, auditory... tactile?
Giancarlo when i was 2, being on the kitchen top w/ my mom cooking and me dipping her watch in a galss
Lloyd was there water in the glass?
Giancarlo later i foudn out that watch was expensive and i was dipping it in vinigar when i asked my folk what that memory was...
Lloyd wow. do you remember the smell of the vinegar more, or the feel of the watch?
Giancarlo no it visual . . . most my memories are visual and taste
Lloyd what were the colors you recall then, from that watch-vinegar memory?
Giancarlo my mom was wearing a yellow dress and had long hair. . i had green coverall on and a green striped shirt
Giancarlo i remember the watch was gold (now i knwo what gold is ) and no i dont remember much after that
Lloyd aw man, that's wonderful! my earliest memories tend to be auditory... things i heard. i can still hear them.
Giancarlo ? still hear then ? lloyd are u hearing voices again ? do they tellu to kill liek they tell me ? j/k
Lloyd ::lol:: no voices, actually. i wish i could remember how i sounded as a 2 or 3 year old. can you?
Lloyd i can hear the peanuts my grandma scooped out of a tin can and onto the floor, where she crushed them with a pestle.
Giancarlo acatully i recall visual memories at times when ihear my uncle(he lived w. us when i was 2-7) and some words my mom says to me
Lloyd what words for example?
Giancarlo from my mom is my middle name, romeo, she has a special way she says it
Giancarlo sound like jome, when i was lil i coudl not say the r in spanish word so she imitated me so i wouild learn
Lloyd aww. that's definitely cute.
Giancarlo lol if this gets out me kill u ! j/k
Lloyd i'm doing something interesting right now... as it happens, i'm also talking to Anna about early childhood memories.
Lloyd would you mind if i wrote about this and quoted you some? (minus the "Jome" since that's apparently very private. lol)
Giancarlo lol u can tell her the jome part. . . if she heard my mom she woudl ask anyways my life open book man =)
Lloyd no, i mean write on my weblog. lol
Lloyd the question of early memories has always intrigued me, for some reason.
Giancarlo lol go ahead
