first morning in Lahaina
Woke up at around 9, and I imagined I could hear the ocean, a block away. OK so it was just my imagination... surf conditions these days are flat and anyway, the wharf area doesn't get much in the way of large surf to begin with, even if the north shore is pumping. My room is in the side of the parsonage facing the ocean (west), so it doesn't get early morning sun, unlike at my sleeping area upcountry. So for a dose of sunshine I repair to the study, which faces northeast (see picture; click picture to determine exactly whose weblog that is *snicker*). Some pertinent info re the image's details: old table inherited from previous minister... it reminds me of teachers' school tables in Davao City High School: good heavy wood burnished by time, spilt tea and human limbs. small blue table fan for the warm, humid afternoons and evenings. Early morning is quite pleasant, with a breeze coming off of the West Maui mountains, which are to be seen beyond the coconut tree fronds right there. The coconut trees overhang the driveway below and Luakini Street right there. There's an alley directly in front, and to the left of it is the little, plantation-style cottage house where the Buddhist minister lives. The ancient, 1800s Byodo-In temple still stands, next door to his house. To the right of the alley is an artist's shack, where Bill and Jana and their numerous feral cats live. Whether Skie coexists with these established, neighborhood felines is the question of the day at the Nebres ohana (family/household).
Additional relevant items seen in photograph: the phone, lifeline to cyberspace and all your weblogs. Should you desire to have a live voice chat with me, eschew AIM's silly Talk function, which will be horrendously choppy anyway because of the slow 28.8k connection (soon, ADSL, though!) and just dial 1-808-662-0048. Then, I will hold the phone out the window so you can hear the breeze and the ding-ding-a-ling of the trolley, which shuttles tourists from the Wharf Center (the stop's right next door) to the resorts at Kaanapali Beach. Hm. Quite convenient for me and my boogie board ;-) Item: ubiquitous cup of coffee, without which any morning is incomplete. Item: the lanai (porch) railing just outside the window. When it gets too warm in here, even with all the windows and door open, I'll move to a chair on the shady side of the porch and do wireless netting. Or, I'll just simply log off and go to the beach and contemplate the utter bummishness of my life. ;-)
Speaking of which, I really should go now. Not to bum around, you... last few things need to be fetched from Upcountry. Including Skie the cat, who may be placed in a box with little diamond cutouts (bro Peter did that) so the critter can see where we're taking him, I suppose. Later, all.
