Across the Universe
...which is what Candace speculates would have been one of John Lennon's favorite songs. Faithful weblog readers will know, of course, that yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Lennon's death. Several among the adults on the weblist commented directly on that, and what it was like for them and I loved reading in particular Catherine's and Chris' weblogs on the famous Beatle. We're contemporaries, and what they wrote resonated deeply with me. (All name-links in this paragraph and the next one go to the specific weblog entries.)
The really interesting thing, I think, is that of the weblogs written yesterday (aside from the aforementioned and their Lennonlogs above), quite a few had to do with music! Allow me to begin with mine... even before I read any weblogs that morning, I was writing about Charlie singing. Then, as I was finishing up my writing I started the usual weblog wandering, and noted that Kass wrote about her upcoming Marin choral concert, Spark wrote about missing his musical due to illness, Damien recommended we listen to the Prokofiev Fifth, Laura wrote about singing for her class, Cole shared some lyrics he finds cool and meaningful, and Akira (Chris I.) wrote about a new song on his weblog, and that life goes on. And indeed, life went on for those of us who were alive and sentient, 20 years ago, stunned and left bereft by the passing of a cultural icon. Perhaps it was just a coincidence yesterday, that all these weblogs-with-music were written but I prefer to think otherwise, and believe that John Lennon's spirit was moving among those who wrote.
And then there was Sam. Sam, like John Lennon ;-) is an Englishman, and a new friend of Candace's at the University of Durham where she's on a yearlong Masteral study, whom she somehow managed to get weblogging. Hello SN, and welcome to this community...!! Apologies for the tenuous and flighty connection made between you and Saint John above, but again, somehow it's just fitting that Candace e-mailed me on Friday the 8th with the URL to your self-crafted weblog (might I ask exactly what was the difficulty you were having with editthispage.com?). As an introduction for everyone else, here's something Sam wrote in a recent weblog, that I found interesting and quite droll:
I thought I'd write a few lines. I once thought that one should give ones life to the pursuit of understanding, but as I get older (and sometimes I feel really old) I come to realise that I will never understand everything. Chances are that every time we think we know more or less everything, we realise we know very little at all, as was the case in science at the turn of the century (hence the creation of Q.M. and G.R.) . The only benefit I can see in this age related scepticism about your work, is that you begin to realise the work is by far and away the least important aspect of life and happiness is much more important. Maybe I'm just reverting to being a hippy - my parents will be thrilled.
And yo, dude, it's The University of CALIFORNIA, at Berkeley... by its devotees AND enemies known otherwise and simply, as Cal. ;-) (Three Es as well, as in the good old Bishop of Cloyne.) *chuckle*
